Experience and perspective matter.

PROFILE

A sustainable, people-centred approach to dispute resolution

I’ve learned that experience and perspective matter. These are two of the most important factors that influence expectations and outcomes in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) … and life in general. With this in mind, I think it’s important to share my experiences, how they influence my approach, and allow me to effectively represent my clients.

I have more than two decades of management experience in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors with roles that have included: Director, Lead Negotiator, and Chief Executive Officer. Importantly, my career path also included numerous entry and mid-level positions. This experience was gained within both unionized and non-unionized environments providing me with an in-depth practical understanding of the complexities of organizational change, human development, and management that I can reference to provide opportunities and solutions to my clients.

My years in management and private practice have made it clear that often the most difficult challenges that arise are people related — people issues and

disputes are often at the heart of the failures and successes in our daily interactions. My interest in improving the people-centric aspect of problem solving lead me to pursue a graduate degree focusing on conflict resolution. I have spent the last ten years incorporating this theoretical knowledge and practical experience into my practice. I have consulted, facilitated, mediated and lead negotiations with numerous bargaining units across a variety of sectors including arts and culture, health care, education and government.

These experiences also inform my approach as an instructor at the Queen’s University Industrial Relations Centre. Solving organizational issues often starts with addressing how the individuals view each other and the challenges before them. Addressing the right issues requires that we ask the right questions.

Conflict can be a positive catalyst for change. ADR provides the possibility for those involved in disputes to feel that they have actively directed their outcomes and been dealt with fairly. It is these types of resolutions that allow for further positive growth and healthy organizational cultures.

SERVICES

My practice is comprised of three areas: ADR, Training and Development, and Public Speaking.

ADR

The ADR side of my services includes mediation, facilitation and negotiations. I am a Chartered Mediator (C.Med), International Mediator (IMI), a rostered mediator for the Ontario Public Service and an experienced labour relations negotiator.

Training and Development

The training and development aspect of my practice involves the creation and delivery of customized curriculum for organizations and universities nationally and internationally, including Queen’s University Industrial Relations Centre, Humber College of Applied Arts and Technology, and Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business (Trinidad).

Public Speaking

I feel fortunate to have been able to attain the level

of success that I have and it is important in today’s world to provide a positive example for others and  in my case specifically, for those women like me from minority groups. Currently, woman, and woman of colour, continue to be under-represented in key positions in organizations in Canada and globally.  I contribute to positive change in this area through public speaking engagements on topics that I am passionate about.
